However, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is also used for treating other conditions. Read on for the benefits of this low-risk and non-invasive treatment and how it works to improve one’s body and health.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment involving breathing pure oxygen while inside a pressurised chamber. The extra oxygen is delivered through the lungs and bloodstream, bypassing normal filtering processes. This treatment is also known as breathing pressurised oxygen or Oxygen Hyperbaric Therapy (OHB).
Inside a Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber, patients breathe pure oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen that can be dissolved in the blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and lymph, and therefore increases the amount of oxygen delivered to a person’s organs, tissues and cells.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy works by increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and lymph. This allows additional oxygen to be delivered to the tissues, organs and cells, giving them a boost in healing.
There are multiple different types of Hyperbaric Oxygen chambers, from soft shell (like a tent) chambers to hard shell, hospital grade like chambers.
Our chambers are hard shell, but are not as hardcore as hospital chambers hence why we allow our clients to take their phones, laptops or watch TV within the chamber.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not without side effects, but they are rare and manageable. They include:
Patients who are candidates for Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment will likely have been evaluated by a doctor and found to have a condition that responds to this treatment. Often, this will be for something like arterial or venous insufficiency, when the veins that carry blood from the lower limbs back to the heart are weak and narrow. This is also known as venous reflux or varicose veins.
Patients with chronic wounds are also good candidates for this treatment. This can be the result of diabetes, ageing, falls, poor circulation, poor wound care, and others.
Many think of hyperbaric chambers and HBOT as an emergency treatment only. However, many people are now choosing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help with underlying medical conditions. While this treatment is not a cure, it can help patients feel better and may improve the quality of their lives dramatically.
