Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is an adjunctive treatment modality that uses 100% oxygen at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure. The treatment involves placing the patient in a compression chamber, increasing the environmental pressure within the chamber, followed by the administration of 100% oxygen for respiration that allows for greater oxygenation.
As of 2022, there are 14 approved indications for HBOT and many more conditions that have not yet been approved for which HBOT may be useful (Jones & Cooper, 2022). Wound healing is one of the indications that HBOT serves as an adjunctive therapy, and it has been used to treat chronic wounds for over 50 years (Kulonen & Niinikoski, 1968). HBOT has been indicated for a number of different types of wounds including (Bhutani & Vishwanath, 2012):
Non-healing wounds such as diabetic and vascular insufficiency ulcers have been a major area of study for hyperbaric physicians where HBOT has been used as an adjunctive treatment. Infected wounds like necrotising soft tissue infections and Fournier’s gangrene have been treated using HBOT, as have traumatic wounds such as crush injury, compromised skin grafts and flaps and thermal burns have been treated, and radiation-induced wounds, in particular osteoradionecrosis of mandible, radiation cystitis and radiation proctitis.
HBOT is considered an adjunctive therapy to normal wound care measures rather than a replacement, but its benefits can help many who are currently recovering from a wound, and may expedite the process.
